Live the language

Waterford is a great place to learn English and learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Integrating with your host family, joining local clubs and societies, meeting new friends on the football field or at a music session, watching local sports, visiting beautiful natural wonders or exploring historical ruins-these are all ways you can learn a lot about Ireland, about Waterford, about using English and about yourself.

In the heart of Waterford

Welcome to the oldest city in Ireland and the capital of Ireland’s sunny south east.

With a stunning coastline, sandy beaches, beautiful rivers and magnificent mountains, Waterford is a destination for people who love nature and outdoor sports. We have world class sports facilities, golf courses and equestrian centres. Waterford people are friendly, talkative and famous for their hospitality. A programme of arts and music festivals throughout the year in Waterford ensures that anyone who loves history, music and culture will have a memorable stay in our city.

About Waterford

You will see that Waterford is a compact, welcoming historical city with many beautiful natural features. Only two hours from Dublin, it is in the sunny south east of Ireland, famed for having the warmest and driest climate in Ireland. If you are interested in history, nature, shopping, culture, music, world cuisine, outdoor pursuits or lively nightlife, Waterford will have something for you.

Entertainment

Waterford has a huge range of restaurants, venues, bars, cinemas, theatres and clubs that you can visit. The historical Theatre Royal has a year-round programme of music, dance and theatre from Ireland and around the globe. There are a variety of festivals every year which celebrate culture, art, music, dance, sport and food including Spraoi, Waterford Walls, The Harvest Festival, Dunmore Bluegrass Festival, Tramore Racing Festival, Winterval, the Viking marathon and many more. We feel that taking part in as many social and cultural activities as possible helps give a memorable context to your language learning. The school also has an activity programme to help you meet new friends, learn about Ireland and practice your English.

Cost of Living

In Ireland, Waterford is one of the cheapest urban areas to live in. Similar accommodation can be 50% cheaper than in Dublin and many other necessities, amenities, parking and public transport cost a lot less in Waterford. Waterford is also a very practical city to walk around so you may not need to use a bus or car.

Student Stories

My experience at WELC has been wonderful.
I consider WELC like a big family where
people arrive and leave but where everyone
is important. I think it’s much more than just a
service for clients
